Does anyone want to guess which is the largest long-distance telecommunication company in the world ? No. It’s not AT&T. It’s not any of the wireless providers either. It is Skype. Nearly 8%(http://gigaom.com/2009/03/24/skype-now-the-largest-long-distance-company/) of the world’s long distance traffic goes through them. Now another question : who do you think should buy them ?
My answer would be Microsoft – they own the desktop, they own the office, they own enterprise email, they own enterprise networks as such. Imagine if you can make long distance calls from your desktop. This would be a true UC solution out of the box from the Redmond folks. I think its time to remove manufacturing desktop phones from the ecosystem entirely. How many devices does your desktop need: A PC, an iPAD, an iPhone, an enterprise BB, another desk phone ? It will soon become just the PC and the BB. Note that the iPAD and iPhone are great toys though.
p.s : The oil spill in the Gulf would nothing be compared to the disaster at AT&T when everyone starts making video phone calls with the iPhone.
